Customers at the Scraps KC Creative Reuse Store

KANSAS CITY, Mo. A KC Metro woman says she is helping to put lives back together with a resale store.

Customers do not find second hand shoes or faded bluejeans at Scraps KC, which is located just off the 12th Street Bridge in the West Bottoms. The store is filled with items like fabric, art materials, yarn and office supplies.

The store draws all kinds of customers, said Brenda Mott, executive director.

“We have teachers and parents, artists, do-it-yourselfers and makers,” Mott said.

“We want to bring all sorts of people together, build a community and then learn from each other,” Mott said. “There`s so many things that we can learn – whether it`s educationally, environmentally, creatively – about the way that we live.”

Scraps KC envisions a community focused on helping others. For example, the nonprofit donates supplies to local schools and gives hope to the homeless with warm clothes, fresh meals and volunteer opportunities.

“We certainly want people to realize that there is a human behind every homeless person that is on the streets,” Mott said.

Helping others is something little Merrill takes to heart –often leaving her newly made crafts at the shop as gifts for the homeless.

“For Merrill, I feel like it gives her the opportunity to give back to the community in a way that she thinks is really fun, so she`s totally engaged,” said her mother, Melissa Miller Patt.

About Scraps KC

Scraps KC is a non-profit, creative reuse center that strives to reduce industrial waste and home recyclables through the upcycling and creative reimagining of products and materials normally destined for a landfill. Creative reuse is the process of adding creativity to an already manufactured item to produce a new function in dynamic and artistic ways. Discarded items are resold to the public, such as families, teachers, artists, and other groups for further creative reuse. Workshops, birthday parties and other events also are provided by request.
